I've sent a query to Liam Maguire, hockey leading trivia expert and die hard Habs fan. I will post his reply here as soon as I receive it. March 1909 would have been before the NHA and the Canadiens were formed. Which team was that? My sources were the game stories and lineups published in La Patrie in 1910, part of Quebec's online digital archive at BNQ.Perseushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03758366731940158965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31438400.post-26567743545550436232007-04-02T00:04:00.000-04:002007-04-02T00:04:00.000-04:00Anonymous,I've never found much info on Groulx at ...Anonymous,

I've never found much info on Groulx at all, only that he's played those 7 games.

Cattarinich is listed as having played only 4.

This site is very informative when it comes to goalies.

http://www.prohockeyfr.com/Autres/prenhl-pro.htm

The link is for a french hockey history site. In the 1909-10 NHA season, the Canadiens first, it lists only Teddy Groulx as having played 7 games (1-6, 8.86 GAA).

From this link, again in french:

http://prohockey.forumactif.com/Hockey-c2/L-historique-de-nos-glorieux-et-de-la-LNH-f13/Le-CH-a-la-loupe-t52.htm

...it states that the first goalie was M. Larochelle, who was tossed from a March 11th game and replaced by coach and GM Jack Laviolette. It goes on to say that the Laviolette asks goalie Jos Cattarinich to replace him as GM after only three disastrous games for the franchise. It lists all of Larochelle, Cattarinich, and Teddy Groulx as goalies in no partical order as to first appearance.

At this chat board, it doesn't mention anything about Laviolette going in nets, but lists the following stats for the goalies:

GOALTENDERS GP W L T MINS G.A. G.AVE. SO
Larochelle, 1 1 0 0 72 4 3.33 0
Joe Cattaranich 4 0 4 0 240 34 8.50 0
Teddy Groulx 7 1 6 0 420 62 8.86 0
TEAM TOTAL 12 2 10 0 732 100 8.20 0

Again, the games played are in no particular order.

On another chatboard, athread is running that disputes the Club De Hockey Canadien's orgins stemming from a Wikipedia source saying that the club was transferred from the Haileybury to become the Habs.

Hockey historian Liam Maguire, a die hard Habs fan, pops into the conversation to straighten some facts out. Along the way he lists the starting lineup for the Le Club De Hockey Canadiens first game.

To quote Maguire:

"The game was scheduled at the Jubilee Rink in east end Montréal for March 10, 1909. That morning the French lineup was still not known, but that evening the roster was made up of Laviolette and Pitre, Edouard "Newsy" Lalonde, Emile Coutu, Joseph Dostaler, Robitaille and Alphonse Jette".
The link for this is at:

http://www.sportsgamer.com/forums/hockey-around-world/120741-toronto-announces-bid-2009-world-juniors-4.html

For all three link, you must scroll down some to get to the content of which I speak.

I guess none of this actually clears much of the mystery up. If you should happen upon any info that sheds light onto this, please let me know.

Thanks for stopping by. A nice round number for someone who could very well be our next franchise goalie.

Though, should someone get injured before Huet returns, we might see Michael Leighton lay claim on the 75th spot.Matthew Macaskillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06362199217362511432noreply@blogger.com
