Nothing anywhere in today's news looking back on what happened 53 years ago in relation to what's up with the Chris Pronger suspension. I though someone would make the connection that Rocket Richard was suspended for the balance of the season for his actions and the ensuing riot at the Forum was on this day.
When comparing Pronger's deed to Chris Simon's identical kick, the league has displayed an obvious double standard in how it treats star players versus perceived goons. To me Pronger is as much a cementhead as Simon is, the main difference is that the defenseman is a more vital componant of his team's success.
Perhaps it is just that Gary Bettman is shit scared of a verbal undoing by junkyard dog GM Brian Burke, who would sure tear Bettman a new one if he ever developed Clarence Cambpell sized cajones in this one.
When is the NHL ever going to get it right?
First there is no suspension, and then it is "re-reviewed"?
This is twice now that the NHL has blown a chance to show it means business with it's suspensions and twice they mess it up. First Bertuzzi, now Pronger.
Both times, GM Burke was involved. Coincidence?
Oh yeah, this just in. The NHL, upon further "re-review", has commuted the Maurice Richard suspension to 8 games. The league has deliberated that the Rocket was in fact provoked into his actions and therefore not fully liable for the extent of his crimes.
